Mother-Daughter Time September 4, 2008

Just so you don’t get the idea that I either head off to the hills by myself or in the company of ChessMan, I decided to share some pix I took on a trip TheGirl and I made together for her birthday a few years back.
Although I don’t have any pix to document it, the first major trip the girl and I took alone together was to London for her 12th birthday. I thought that would be a blast, and in a lot of ways it was. TheGirl’s birthday is in November, so London didn’t show itself from its warmer side while we were there.
But we did have our memorable moments, which included a side trip to Oxford to visit a friend. Of course the hotel room was crappy (I’ve never once stayed in a hotel in London that I felt was worth what I paid for it!), and we almost passed out from the heat plus the disinfectant fumes. There was also the little problem with the broken toilet seat, which TheGirl promptly fell off of. She loved the big, soft cookies we found at some place, though. Also the funky little soup place we located off Covent Garden. We saw “Starlight Express” while we were there, too. I wanted that outing to be a surprise. Though her first comment was “Are they going to sing the whole time????”, TheGirl actually loved the performance, and so did I.
I can’t remember every single time I traveled with TheGirl, I know I also toted her along with me on a 3-day business trip to Berlin and to visit with friends in Hamburg.
The pix included here were from the later b’day trip which we took to a spa hotel in the Netherlands. We spent the days driving around and taking in the wildlife in the vicinity.

mother-daughter time is great! I usually limit myself to sharing popcorn and a movie, though we did go to the sauna together once. A weekend away with her is still on my list of things I’d love to do.
because i used to work so much, i made a special point of going away with the kids on my own whenever i could. it was sometimes stressful, but always fun. one of the most memorable weekends we had was when i took TheBoy, one of his friends, and TheGirl to Ijmuiden for the weekend. we stayed at the Holiday Inn there and – despite the windy, stormy weather – had a blast. it was so windy that when we walked along the beach, the girls – who are both rather small in stature – were almost whisked away! we ended the afternoon in the sauna, then rested before hitting the chinese restaurant next door. after much talk and food and fun, i think we all slept like logs that night!
