Now that I am self-employed one of my biggest challenges (aside from getting new clients/projects) is self-discipline. I have the luxury of a home office, but that also means I never get away from domestic chores, better known as distractions. When I still worked in the corporate world, once I closed my door to go to the office all thoughts of emptying the dishwasher or folding the laundry were left behind me till I was on my way back home again. Now a trip to the kitchen for a fresh pot of tea can bring on the temptation… On the other hand, when the weather is marvelous, why NOT get out? Whether it’s a bike ride in the country or an hour spent weeding in the garden, isn’t the freedom to spontaneously take a break from my computer one of the benefits of self-employment and having a home office???
ChessMan found this online yesterday and printed out a copy for me… It really says it all!
BUSINESS HOURS
We’re Open
Most days from about 9 or 10,
Occasionally as early as 7,
But some days as late as 12 or 1
We’re Closed
About 5:30 or 6.
Occasionally about 4 or 5,
But sometimes as late as 11 or 12.
Some days or afternoons we aren’t here at all,
and lately I’ve been here just about all the time,
except when I’m someplace else,
but I should be here then, too.

For technical reasons ChessMan and I were offline for almost exactly two weeks. Although we don’t think about it otherwise, after about 24 hours into our involuntary phase of withdrawal, we were seriously asking ourselves:
“What the hell did people do BEFORE the internet?!?!?”
