Nostalgia? Melancholia? November 18, 2008

Why is it that your time slips past you? I can remember when the people on the series I really loved were all older than me. I aspired to be as talented, cool and savvy as they were. Then – inexplicably – everyone I saw on a great series was suddenly younger than me. ‘My time’ somehow seemed to have gone by unnoticed and unheralded.

Ok, you say: It’s up to each and every one of us to seize the day. Carpe Diem. But for some mysterious reason I always felt I was either just before or just after ‘my time’. Never simply IN it. Never just BEING in the right space.

Strange.

I, Too, Sing America November 9, 2008

I, too, sing America.
I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.
Tomorrow,
I’ll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody’ll dare say to me,
“Eat in the kitchen”, then.
Besides,
They’ll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed…
I, too, am America.

Rosa sat, so Martin could walk;

Martin walked, so Barack could run;

Barack ran, so we all can FLY!

Edited to add this version by Seal, which I think is really pretty good, too!
